The Savonia University of Applied Sciences is a professional higher education institution of Northern soap in Finland. The hotel has campuses in Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus. By its number of students, it is one of the most important universities of applied sciences in Finland. Savonia has 6 526 students in 2011. Until 2004, it was known as the "Polytechnic School of Northern soap".
At Savonia UAS education is built on a concept called OIS. The letters stand for Open Innovation Space. The concept combines worklife-oriented learning and research and development activities supporting it. The focus is on creation and deepening of the connections between students and working life so that it is possible for every student to become familiar with the jobs and tasks in a particular field.
The campus is very large and has several schools, we have access to 3 restaurants and all the rooms we want to work in groups. The pupil-teacher approach is completely different in France, the Finns are very close to their teachers, they talk to each other as friends while respecting each other. There is a real understanding between the two. In Finland, the school does not oblige teachers and pupils to sign a certificate of attendance. It communicates very easily on WhatApps or by Email.
We have classes with different students from different years and also with students from other countries. The courses in Finland are very different from those in France, all our courses are organized on a 2h time slot whereas the lessons only last 1h, When we start at 10am, the class starts only from 10h30 and finish at 11:30. This allows Finnish students to have time to come to class. In Finland, the school does not oblige teachers and pupils to sign a certificate of attendance. It communicates very easily on WhatApps or by Email.
At Savonia University, we have different classrooms to work in the best possible conditions, we have rooms with several computers ... which is very interesting here is that the rooms are all glazed, the rooms are much more adhered which is very nice as a student.
In Finnish schools, it is difficult to approach Finns at first, they need to be put in trust, and we talk a lot. When Finnis appreciate someone, they are immediately very open minded, they also want to learn a lot about ourselves and ask a lot of questions. The teachers also helped us a lot by integrating with Finnish people to discover their culture and learn their working methods.
